The Golden Apple Foundation Surprises Turner Drew Language Academy Teacher Alicia Carlisle with Prestigious Award for Excellence in Teaching
CHICAGO (MAY 2, 2024) - The Golden Apple Foundation, the leading Illinois-based nonprofit committed to preparing, mentoring, and honoring great educators who advance educational opportunities for students, today surprised Alicia Carlisle, a 1st-grade teacher at Turner Drew Language Academy in Chicago, with the prestigious Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Carlisle is one of 10 teacher award recipients in Illinois.
Following a highly competitive process, the 2024 teaching award recipients were selected from more than 600 nominations of Pre-K-3rd grade teachers.

The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching honor outstanding teachers for having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and school communities. Teacher recipients demonstrate – in their teaching and results – significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning.
About Alicia Carlisle
Alicia Carlisle's dedication to teaching is evident in her daily efforts and planning to provide her students with a rich learning experience. Working to address curriculum gaps and student deficits, she tailors her approach to meet individual and collective needs. Carlisle goes beyond traditional teaching methods, engaging students in a captivating "holidays around the world" unit. Virtually transporting them to different countries, she facilitates interactive activities and read-aloud sessions to explore cultural, historical, and celebratory traditions.
Carlisle fosters an environment that encourages questioning, problem-solving, and active learning. Her well-organized classroom, effective communication, and reflective teaching practices highlight her commitment to creating an optimal learning space. Carlisle utilizes various resources and technology, constantly assessing students to ensure they comprehend the subject matter. Her commitment extends to creating opportunities for parental involvement in their child's education.
Each award recipient receives a $5,000 cash award and a spring sabbatical provided by Northwestern University at no cost. Award recipients also become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who play an important role in preparing the next generation of teachers in the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs - which are dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois.
